Events

The Collaborative hosts events and meetings throughout the year to build community, offer resources to support families, and facilitate participation in working group activities and initiatives. Some key events include:

Since 2013, our Early Childhood Learning and Development team of staff and resident leaders have collaborated with various agencies and organizations to host Family Enrichment Nights the first Wednesday of each month. These events provide an opportunity for BBK Zone parents and children to engage in family-friendly activities, eat together, and build relationships with each other, the staff, and various leaders from the Collaborative’s member organizations. Additionally, each Family Enrichment Night is designed intentionally to be a bilingual (Spanish/English) space.

BikeFiestaThe Collaborative holds an annual Family Bike Fiesta each May. This event promotes community, family, and cycling as a healthy and economical way for people of all ages to travel, and builds support for safe streets. The first Bike Fiesta exceeded attendance expectations, with over 200 families, and 450 people participating.

AA-BabyshowerThe African American Baby Shower is a model event for new and pregnant African American parents where participating members of the African American Health Initiative and BBK Collaborative organizations provide education and workshops related to nutrition, physical activity, strategies for ensuring healthy baby and child outcomes, and a Men’s Involvement Group.

Working groups are the principal mechanism through which the objectives of the BBK Collaborative project are achieved. More information about these groups is available here. Each working group provides the opportunity for a wide array of interest groups, organizations, and community residents to become involved in BBK Collaborative projects. Working groups hold monthly or bimonthly meetings to plan activities, achieve objectives, and work towards specific outcomes.  Interested individuals, groups, and organizations can contact Yasmin Ahmed, BBK Collaborative Action Coordinator, at yahmed@bbk-richmond.org to discuss opportunities for involvement.
